Hepatitis is a viral disease that causes inflammation in the liver. The five viruses primarily associated with hepatitis were named A, B, C, D, and E, in order of discovery. Acute (newly developing disease) viral hepatitis is mostly in the form of hepatitis A (HAV), hepatitis B (HBV) and hepatitis C (HCV), and only HBV and HCV cause chronic (more than 6 months) hepatitis.
